Some neighborhoods use city-issued 100-gallon black barrels to set out trash. Our crews collect these barrels in automated trucks equipped with specially designed arms that grasp, lift and empty the container.
Barrel service reminders:
Place overflow trash four feet away from your barrel - maximum of ten items per scheduled overflow collection day (includes combination of bundled branches and household trash).
- Overflow bags or containers of household trash will be collected per overflow collection cycle (every 3 weeks). Overflow bags or containers must be 32 gallons or less in size, and weigh no more than 50 pounds each.
- Bundled branches can be set out as overflow. Branches must be tied and bundled in bundles less than 4 feet in length with no branch larger than 4 inches in diameter and easily handled by one person. Branch bundles count as part of your ten items acceptable for collection during your scheduled overflow collection cycle (every 3 weeks).
During scheduled LIP Collection:
- A maximum of five large items (furniture, etc.) will be collected per LIP cycle (every nine weeks) per household.
- Be sure to set out your barrel by 7 AM on your scheduled collection day. Collection vehicles will not be able to return for late set outs, as service resources are extremely limited.
- Do not place unacceptable items in your black trash barrel. Barrels containing tree limbs, branches or wood boards cannot be emptied, as they cause damage to the collection vehicles.
- Set out your barrel in the flow line of the gutter or on the designated side of the alley leaving at least 4 feet of clearance from other containers, parked cars, lamp posts, trees, mailboxes, etc. This way the the automated truck can access and safely empty the container.
- Fill your barrel to its maximum capacity. Barrels can be slightly overfilled past the top of the rim, but the height of the lid must not exceed 45 degrees above the barrel rim. Overfull barrels with lids exceeding 45 degrees cannot be serviced. Do not place trash on top of the lid, as this will result in your barrel not being serviced.
- Store your black barrel and any other trash containers out of public view on non-collection days.
