New Shelter Highlights
New Denver Animal Shelter Now Open!
Thanks to the citizens of Denver through the Better Denver Bond Program, the new Denver Animal Shelter, located at 1241 W. Bayaud Ave. (opened June 8) is more than twice the size of the old one. It includes a community room, surgical suite, a barn to house urban wildlife, TONS of natural light, radiant floor heating, and other sustainable features that make it a healthier place for pets, people--and the planet! To help celebrate the move to the new location, the shelter is offering reduced adoption fees on all animals until the end of July.

Sun Spot is a three-piece public art sculpture was installed at the new Denver Animal Shelter on May 25. Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan, environmental artists based out of Seattle, WA, were awarded the Sun Spot art commission through a competition held by DOCA in 2010.
The primary piece is a 25’-tall iconic dog sculpture located at the southeast corner of the site, adjacent to the South Platte Trail and visible from Interstate-25. The sculpture is made from a structural steel skeleton overlaid with stainless steel mesh that is covered with over 90,000 individual stainless steel pet tags.
|
The second piece of Sun Spot is a suspended sculpture located in the front lobby and adoption waiting room of the new facility. Its principal element is a 6’-diameter collar sized to fit the exterior dog sculpture. Hanging from the collar will be an oversized pet tag etched with the name “Sun Spot.” Every time a pet is adopted from the shelter, the new owner will be given an opportunity to have a pet tag engraved with the name of the pet and date of the adoption. They will then be allowed to attach the tag to the sculpture, which is designed to accommodate up to 7,000 tags. |
Adoption Lobby
There will be separate lobbies for adoption services.
The extra room allows for more amenities and features, including people and animal-friendly pet adoption space.
