Mulch Giveaway and LeafDrop
Compost Sale for
Saturday, May 3, from 8 AM to 3 PM. Mulch and compost are essential gardening tools to help soil maintain moisture.
Free mulch will be available at four locations while LeafDrop Compost will be available at the main Havana Nursery site only. Mulch is FREE and available to Denver residents on a first-come-first-serve basis.
- Northeast: Havana Nursery, 10450 Smith Road, two blocks south of I-70 on Havana.

- Southeast: Veterans Park, Iowa and Vine (Dig-your-own mulch)
- Southwest: Bear Creek Park, South of Dartmouth on Raleigh (Dig-your-own mulch)
- Northwest: Sloan’s Lake Park, Sheridan and 17th Ave. (Dig-your-own mulch)
The TreeCycle Loader service for trucks and trailers will only be available at the Havana Nursery site.
The mulch is produced by grinding more than 15,000 Christmas trees collected by Denver Public Works/Solid Waste Management this past holiday season. Mulch is made of ground wood chips and generally used as a top dressing for soil around trees and plants. It helps control weeds, aids the soil in retaining moisture and protects shallow-rooted plants from weather extremes.
Compost is a nutrient-rich soil amendment made from decomposed organic materials such as leaves and grass. Resembling soil, compost helps to reduce water and chemical fertilizer needs. It can be mixed into garden soil or spread thinly over the lawn to help the grass roots. Compost can retain 100% of its weight in water and is an important component of gardening in a drought.
LeafDrop compost is made from 200 tons of leaves collected from Denver residents last fall and will be sold for $3 per 10-gallon bag (about 40 pounds) and about $30 per cubic yard with loader service (for open trailers and pick-ups). A standard full size pick-up bed holds about 2.5 cubic yards. Sales tax will be added to the prices noted. LeafDrop Compost will be sold at the Havana Nursery site only.
Important Reminders:
- Only Denver residents may participate.
- Residents may dig their own mulch at all sites. Bring a pitchfork or shovel, and your own bags or containers to shovel and transport your supply of mulch or compost.
- Residents not using the loader service should be prepared to shovel their own compost.
- Residents with open truck or trailer beds must fully cover their loads with a tarp.
- No commercial vehicles over 6 cubic yards.
