Denver Updates Building Code
New Rules Start August 4, 2008

The City & County of Denver has adopted the 2006 Series of Building Codes established by the International Code Council, and 2005 National Electrical Code. Builders have the option of using the new or old code during a transition period.

The new Code is available for use now! Builders may use either the 2004 Denver Building Code or the new 2008 Denver Building Code for any projects that will be submitted to Denver Community Planning and Development before the effective date of this Code- August 4, 2008.

Major projects in the design stage during the drafting of the new Code that will be submitted to Denver Community Planning and Development after the effective date of this Code may be reviewed under the 2004 Denver Building Code, provided that the owner or the owner's agent submits a letter of commitment to the Denver Building Official stating:
  1. Choice to continue under the 2004 Denver Building Code or use the new Code;
  2. Address of the construction project;
  3. Description, number of stories, floor area, occupancy, etc., of the building;
  4. Date of beginning design drawings;
  5. Date of submitting construction drawings to Denver Community Planning and Development.
  6. That the construction of the project will start within 6 months and be completed within 24 months of the effective date of this Code if the option is to use the 2004 Denver Building Code.
A letter of commitment must be submitted by the effective date of this Code. Letters may be sent to the Denver Building Official, Dept 205, 201 W. Colfax Avenue, Denver, Colorado 80202
