John Davis - Denver Skatepark - June 2007

Aerial

Denver Skatepark

Aerial is a two-part sculpture, made of steel and concrete, for Denver Skatepark.  The artist’s vision for the piece was to create a manifestation of the athletic movements of the Skatepark users.  The two components of the sculpture bracket the stairs in the center of the park and give form to the beginning and end of an aerial stunt.  The larger element is anchored by a monumentally scaled wheel, tilted off plumb to evoke a sense of dynamism.  The elongated undulating plane atop the wheel, with a smaller wheel at its tip, references the launching into air.  The second element consists of a steel wheel atop a concrete arc, symbolizing the inevitable return to earth.  The sculpture celebrates the physical motion on wheels that is the subject of the park.

John Davis discovered sculpture while attending Northern Arizona University, in the mountainous rim country of Arizona, where he received a B.F.A. in 1979.  The “machine in the landscape” and geometry have become important themes in his work, which frequently combines contrasting materials including wood, steel, concrete and stone.  In 1987, Davis earned an M.F.A. at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he currently lives.  He exhibits in galleries in Tucson, Scottsdale and Solana Beach and has shown in New York, NY and Washington, D.C.  His sculptures are in numerous private and corporate collections.  He recently completed a public artwork for the City of Tucson Patrick K. Hardesty Midtown Service Center.
