The Denver Elections Division does not conduct the precinct caucuses nor the delegate selection process. The caucuses are conducted by the political parties.
The following information is provided solely as a public service.
What is a caucus?
A neighborhood meeting where people in the same political party begin that party’s nominating process every other year (even-numbered years).
When are the 2012 caucuses?
- Republican Party: Tuesday, February 7, 2012
- Democratic Party: Tuesday, March 6, 2012
- American Constitution Party: March 6, 2012 (Candidates to conduct caucus in their home precincts.)
Who may participate?
Registered voters who have been affiliated with the Republican or Democratic parties for at least 60 days prior to the caucuses, and who have resided in their precinct for at least 30 days.
- For Republicans: You must be registered as a Republican by December 7, 2011 and have residence in your precinct by January 9, 2012.
- For Democrats: You must be registered as a Democrat by January 6, 2012 and have residence in your precinct by February 6, 2012.
- For American Constitution Party: You must be registered as ACP by January 6, 2012 and have residence in your precinct by February 6, 2012.
Anyone is welcome to attend the caucus, but must be registered with the Democratic Party, Republican Party or American Constitution Party in their precinct in order to vote in the caucus.
Exception: If you turn 18 or become a U.S. citizen during the two-month period prior to the caucuses AND register to vote prior to the day of the caucuses, you may participate in the caucuses of the party you affiliated with when you registered.
May unaffiliated voters participate?
Not in Colorado, although other states allow that.
What precinct do I live in?
Check the maps above, look it up on your voter record at www.govotecolorado.com, or if in Denver, call 311. Click on the “View my Voter Registration Status” link to see your precinct and political districts. To access your voter information, you must enter your name, date of birth and zip code. The last three numbers of the 10 digit ID number indicate your precinct number.
Where is my precinct caucus?
Check the maps above, or check your county party website (www.denvergop.org or www.denverdemocrats.net), state party website (www.coloradogop.org, www.coloradodems.org or www.americanconstitutionparty.com), or call your county party (Democratic Party, 303-830-8242; Republican Party, 303-782-9555; American Constitution Party, 303-332-5113).
What time do the caucuses start?
Usually at 7 p.m., but voters are encouraged to show up about 45 minutes early because their names must be matched against registration lists.
What occurs at a caucus?
At every caucus, the general agenda is:
- Elect a chair and secretary of the caucus
- Elect 2 precinct committee people to represent the precinct on the party’s county central committee
- Elect delegates to the county assembly/county convention
- Introduce, debate, and approve or reject resolutions and platform issues
