Inventory of Historic Records

Before records inventory

After records inventory

The Office of the Clerk and Recorder is the official depository for many types of city records that have both informational and historical value. Records ranging from contracts and City Council minutes and resolutions to articles of incorporation dating back a hundred years or more are among the records to be found in the Clerk's office.

In 2008, former Clerk and Recorder Stephanie Y. O'Malley in initiated the project of inventorying a huge collection of boxed paper records that were stored for many years unindexed and unsorted. To date, more than 290,000 documents (for a total of 2.64 million individual pages) have been examined, catalogued and inventoried, and reorganized and refiled for better preservation and future retrieval. Among some of the treasures uncovered:

  • Articles of Incorporation for entities including: Denver Dumb Friends League; Bonfils Foundation; Gates Corporation; Coca Cola Bottling; Denver Press Club; Elitches; Russell Stover's Candy; Prince Hall Masons; Western Stock Show Association; Jewish Consumptives Relief Society (National Jewish Hospital); Public Service Company of Colorado; and St. Luke's Hospital
  • Ordinances and Resolutions dating back to the 1800s
  • Warranty Deeds and Titles including 1850 land grants from the U.S. government
  • Historic Oaths of Office
  • Historic right of way and easement documents.
