On the afternoon of Sunday, August 1st, 1994 members of the Denver Police Department were called to investigate a possible missing person from a residence in the Ruby Hill Park Neighborhood. Upon arrival at the home, which was near the intersection of West Louisiana Avenue and South Quivas Street, officers discovered a large amount of blood within the home. During the course of the initial investigation, Denver Police Homicide Detectives learned from investigators at the Castle Rock Police Department that the body had been found discarded on a rural road within their jurisdiction the day prior. In researching the two cases, detectives were able to establish that Sergio Torrez shot and killed Javier Varela in Denver and disposed of his body in Castle Rock. Shortly after the shooting, suspect Torrez fled the area and has not been located since. Currently, a warrant for Sergio Torrez’s arrest has been issued for Investigation of First Degree Murder.
