Pilot Program Update: June 2009 Minimize
Hurray!  The Composting Collection Pilot Program has been extended through March 2010, thanks to a generous grant from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and Denver Solid Waste Management!   Please continue to set your cart out each week for collection through the summer and fall.

To help ensure your compostable food scraps do not create odors or attract pests during Denver’s hot summer months, please try using the following collection techniques:

  • Freeze all meat, fish and dairy product food scraps before placing them in your green cart.
  • Wait to place food scraps in your green cart until the night before your collection day.
  • Bury food scraps in between yard debris and soiled paper within your green cart.
  • Place food scraps inside a compostable paper bag, newspaper, empty paper milk carton or BioBag before tossing them in your green cart.
  • Put your green cart out for collection every week so that food scraps are emptied from your cart on a regular basis and do not sit in the cart for an extended period of time.
  • Make sure the lid to your green cart is closed at all times.
  • Give your green cart an occasional cleaning with a hose after your collection.
Thanks for your efforts to be a good neighbor and composter this hot summer season!

 Denver Composts! Minimize

Denver residents have proven they are great recyclers.  Thanks to a grant from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and donations from Rehrig Pacific and A1 Organics, we are taking recycling to the next level in Denver by testing composting collection through a new pilot program.  Organic material like food, soiled paper and yard debris is the single largest item we throw away in our landfill, and it is 100% compostable.

The residential composting collection pilot program will test collection services at 3,300 Denver homes.  Each participating home has received a green, 65-gallon composting cart and a small kitchen pail to collect organic material inside the home.  The green carts are serviced weekly during the growing season, and every-other-week during the winter.

The composting collection program accepts organic material such as yard debris, food and soiled paper. The program strictly prohibits any type of plastic materials, glass or metal, as these are contaminants that prohibit the ability to compost the organic material.

Stay tuned to this site for information about the program and our progress.
